Strasbourg–Karlsruhe: save 5–12 c/L on E10 fuel

French E10 near the A35 typically runs 5–12 cents per litre below German motorway service station rates. On the approach to the Rhine crossing, a quick stop before the border can save €3–6 on a standard fill — without adding meaningful time to the journey.

Decision question

Should the driver fill before leaving France, stop near the border, or continue into Germany?

What Kilomo should compare

  • French E10 along the A35 corridor typically runs 5–12 c/L below German motorway service station rates — the gap narrows at off-motorway city stations inside Germany.
  • An exit toward a French station before the bridge adds roughly 2 km and under 5 minutes versus staying on the A35; the saving on a 50-litre fill at 7 c/L is €3.50.
  • German MTS-K station prices refresh frequently — if German stations near Kehl or Karlsruhe are unusually cheap on a given day, the French-first rule breaks down.
  • Crit'Air restrictions apply within Strasbourg's ZFE perimeter but not on the A35 transit corridor — diesel Euro 4 and below only need to check if they plan to enter the city centre.

The Strasbourg–Karlsruhe drive crosses two fuel-pricing systems. France uses station-level open data published by each operator, updated at every price change. Germany uses MTS-K (Markttransparenzstelle für Kraftstoffe), a transparency system requiring operators to upload prices multiple times daily. Both systems let you compare prices before making the stop.

The general pattern: French E10 near the A35 corridor runs 5–12 c/L below German motorway service stations. If you are crossing at Kehl/Breisach and heading straight up the A5 to Karlsruhe, the last French exit is the natural decision point.

Where to stop on the French side

The A35 southbound from Strasbourg toward Kehl gives you several practical options:

Illkirch-Graffenstaden area (A35 exit 6 or nearby): The closest cluster of French stations before the Rhine bridge. Pull-off adds roughly 2 km and 4–6 minutes versus staying on the A35.

Strasbourg Port du Rhin district (near the bridge): A small number of independents in this area are often competitive — check Kilomo live prices before committing.

Motorway service station (A35 Alsace Sud): The motorway station option is zero-detour but typically priced 5–10 c/L above the same brand's local network. Only choose this if the live price shows it is competitive on the day.

Rule of thumb: At a 7 c/L gap, a 50-litre fill earns €3.50. A 2-minute detour to a nearby station is clearly worth it. A 15-minute town-centre search is not.

German stations near Kehl and Karlsruhe

German MTS-K data covers stations on both sides of the Rhine in Germany. On specific days, well-placed German city stations in Kehl, Offenburg or Baden-Baden can price within 3–5 c/L of French averages.

Check the live Kilomo prices before assuming France is always cheaper. If the German station near your first exit is within 3 c/L of the French option, the difference on a 50-litre fill is under €1.50 — not worth a French detour.

For Karlsruhe city-bound drivers, ARAL and Shell stations on the B36 approaching the city often undercut motorway service prices by 8–12 c/L. If your destination is central Karlsruhe, you can sometimes get a better German price there than on the motorway — but not consistently.

Crit'Air and the Strasbourg ZFE

Strasbourg operates a Zone à Faibles Emissions (ZFE) low-emission zone in the urban area. Key points for fuel-stop routing:

  • Crit'Air 1–2 (petrol Euro 4+, diesel Euro 5–6): no restrictions on the ZFE or the A35 corridor
  • Crit'Air 3 (diesel Euro 4, petrol up to Euro 2): daily restrictions in the ZFE from 7:30 am to 8 pm on weekdays — but the A35 transit corridor is NOT affected
  • Crit'Air 4–5 and unclassified vehicles: face more significant restrictions inside the city ZFE boundary

If you are simply transiting Strasbourg on the A35 without entering the city (driving straight from the A4 to the Rhine bridge), Crit'Air restrictions do not apply regardless of your sticker level.

If your stop is inside the Strasbourg city boundary (Port du Rhin stations, certain supermarket forecourts), check whether your sticker permits entry during active restriction hours.

For the purpose of this route, a petrol stop in Illkirch-Graffenstaden is outside the ZFE boundary for most drivers and requires no sticker check.

Worked example

  • Route: Strasbourg (A35) → Kehl crossing → Karlsruhe (A5/A65)
  • Fill size: 50 litres E10
  • French station (Illkirch exit): live price €1.74/L
  • German motorway service (A5 Baden): live price €1.83/L
  • Gap: 9 c/L

Gross saving: €4.50 Detour cost (2 km, 7.5 L/100km, €1.74): €0.26 Net saving: €4.24 — clear yes.

If the German first-exit station near Kehl shows €1.77/L, the gap narrows to 3 c/L and the net saving on a 2-km detour falls to ~€1.15. At that spread, personal time preference determines the call.
